Ethics & Values

Imago is committed to ensuring that the items we produce are manufactured in factories which operate ethically and responsibly, and in 2003 was the prime mover in setting up the prelims initiative (Publishers Resolution for Ethical International Manufacturing Standards).

The companies involved in prelims work to promote and implement a common internationally-recognised social accountability standard, to which they themselves and their suppliers must adhere. The standard covers all areas relating to working conditions, including health and safety issues, adequate remuneration, working hours, and the prohibition of the use of child or forced labour. Called the CARE Process, it is the standard used by the global toy industry and is managed by their industry body, the International Council of Toy Industries (ICTI).

Companies signing the prelims resolution are pledged to require that their suppliers achieve the standards necessary to be awarded the CARE Process Seal of Approval, and then demonstrate that they are maintaining that standard through a system of regular independent audits carried out by international audit companies. Prelims is endorsed by the Publishers Association, and signatories include Anova, Bloomsbury, Chronicle, Dorling Kindersley, Egmont, Faber & Faber, HarperCollins, Hodder Headline, Imago, Oxford University Press, Pan Macmillan, Pearson, Penguin, Random House, Templar, Simon & Schuster UK, Usborne, Walker Books and Watts.

Ethical Paper Sourcing - PREPS

Imago is a founding member of PREPS - a joint initiative from ten of the UK's leading publishers to capture information about the papers they are using . Together these companies have set up a database to hold technical specifications and details of the pulps and forest sources for each of the papers.

Based on this information each paper is awarded a grade of 1-5 stars using the Egmont Grading System ©. This considers whether material has been legally harvested (or recycled) and how the forest sources have been managed.

The PREPS secretariat, run by the Corporate Responsibility Consultancy Acona Ltd, approaches paper mills directly to gather the information on behalf of the members.   PREPS members are able to share this information with each other and use it to help aid their buying decisions.
